A knitted computer sleeve that combines knitting, crazy patchwork, embroidery and crocheted details. It protects your laptop while making it much more fun to carry around.

The Magazine Sleeve is a collaboration between FrejasKnit and soft sculpture textile artist Albertine Brask.

In a digital world, this sleeve is a celebration of handmade craftsmanship. Of wonky stitches, soft materials and personal expression. Here, it's okay if it looks handmade—in fact, that's exactly the point.

You'll begin by knitting the sleeve itself, creating the foundation of the project. The front is then decorated with crazy patchwork, appliqués, embroidery and crocheted letters. The pattern includes templates for every element on the front, but we also hope you'll feel inspired to make the design your own. Change the text, play with the colours, add new motifs or embroider your own little details. It's these personal touches that make every sleeve one of a kind.

Finally, the sleeve is lined to keep your laptop well protected, and buttons are sewn onto the flap to keep it securely closed.

Throughout the pattern, we share examples of the stitches and techniques we've used, but feel free to experiment and find your own way. Play, explore and make it yours. If something doesn't turn out the way you hoped, you can always stitch over it—or simply remove it and try again!

Use what you already have in your stash, tucked away in drawers or hidden in the attic. There's no need to buy lots of new materials.

MATERIALS

Recommended needles & crochet hook

• 7 mm (US 10¾) circular needle, 60 cm (24")

• 3 mm crochet hook

Gauge

11 stitches in stockinette stitch on 7 mm needles (or the needle size needed to obtain gauge) = 10 cm (4")

Please note: The fabric should be knitted quite densely, with very little space between the stitches.

Yarn

• 200–300 g Drops Snow or an equivalent amount of scrap yarn

• Approx. 15 g of 8/8 cotton yarn (or similar) for the crocheted letters (a leftover from your stash is perfect)

Fabric

For Heat Transfer appliqués (optional, if you'd like glitter details):

• 25 × 25 cm (10" × 10") off-white

• 25 × 25 cm (10" × 10") coral red

• 25 × 25 cm (10" × 10") black

• 15 × 15 cm (6" × 6") light pink (cheeks)

• 15 × 15 cm (6" × 6") light lavender (eye makeup)

In addition:

• Approx. 80 cm (31½") white fabric for the "pages"

• Approx. 35 cm (14") pink fabric for the "spine"

• Fabric for the lining (see pattern for required amount)

Other materials

• 3 buttons, 2 cm (¾") in diameter

• 1 tapestry needle

• 1 sewing needle

• Sewing thread in various colours (we used white, black, red, neon and pink glitter thread)

• Sewing pins

• Fabric chalk (optional)

• Quilt batting or wadding for the lining (optional)
