The shopkeeper's house is knitted from the bottom up in garter stitch (i.e. knit on both right and wrong side).

Here, the knitting strength does not matter so much and you can safely mix a lot of different yarns. Join the yarn together by tying knots. You can staple the ends or leave them visible as part of the expression.
